Grand Contender, a 5-year-old gelded son of HallMarc Stallion Strong Contender, scored an impressive victory in the $150,000...
Strong Contender, Florida’s only son of Champion Maria’s Mon, won the Super Derby (G2) at age three, defeating Lawyer Ron, and also captured that year’s Dwyer Stakes (G2) by 7 3/4 lengths. In proving he ranked among the top 3-year-olds of his crop, Strong Contender also finished third to Bluegrass Cat in the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) and was third in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and the Peter Pan Stakes (G2). He retired to stud having won half of his eight career starts and amassing earnings of $618,000.
In 2012, Strong Contender has been represented on the racetrack by his talented stakes-winning daughter Awesome Fire. Winner of the Wonder Where Stakes, the final leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, at Woodbine, Awesome Fire was one of only two horses to compete in all three legs of the series. She finished third in the first leg, the Woodbine Oaks and placed fourth in the second leg, the Bison City Stakes.
Strong Contender is tied with fellow Woodford Stallion It’s No Joke atop Florida’s leading third-crop sire list with three stakes wins.
